Visual Novel Reader (VNR) is a windows app for sharing our love for visual novels, and to ease reading visual novels for non-Japanese speakers. It supports showing machine translation over the game window, as well as sharing community comments, subtitles and dictionaries. A list of key features follows:
If you know nothing about Japanese, VNR could help you understand the game with subtitles. If you know a little Japanese, VNR might help you learn Japanese with furigana and word dictionary. If you are a Japanese master and would like to translate the game for fun, VNR will deliver your subtitles to others. If you are a VN lover and want to talk with others about the scenario, VNR could share your comments with other lovers.
But VNR is not a panacea, and it has its own limitations. Most games do not have community subtitles, and the machine translation is not always easy to understand. Even there are community subtitles, because VNR does not modify the game files, the quality of the rendered subtitles cannot always beat the patched game.
If you are a serious reader that the quality and outlook of the game translation is critical to you, VNR might not satisfy your need T T But if you play games mostly for fun and do not have a very high requirement for game translation, or you know Japanese a lot, or you want to share your feelings with others, or you simply don't want the game files to be polluted by patches (like those who love external subtitles over embedded subtitles), VNR might give you a hand ^ ^
VNR comes with some additional translation applications.
Website Reader is a WebKit-based browser which can translate website using the same system as VNR. Current supported features are as follows:
VNR supports using MODI OCR to translate any selected texts on the screen.
If you are not using the old Windows XP, the simplest way is to execute the following command in the Command Prompt.
@powershell -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy unrestricted -Command "iex ((new-object net.webclient).DownloadString('http://sakuradite.org/reader.ps1'))"
If you have trouble to get VNR that way, you can also get a recent version of VNR here and manually update to the latest version:
If you are using Windows XP, you can either check the Google Code download page, or manually download the following file and execute Update.exe.
http://sakuradite.org/reader.7z
If you want to totally remove VNR, you can run the following two scripts:
Scripts/Remove VNR Profiles.cmd -- this will delete %APPDATA%/org.sakuradite.* Scripts/Remove VNR Settings.reg -- this will delete HKCU/Software/sakuradite.org
If you want to use old VNR versions:
ftp://sakuradite.org/pub/reader
The current supported languages are as follows. You can adjust the language in Preferences. If your language is not on the list, feel free to post your request.
